Preparing the Area

Picture
In preparing the area, our professional design team will assist in the design process utilizing material standards to ensure the most cost effective use of materials in our installation process. We begin with the removal of native soil, sod, rock or other material to a depth of  3"to 4". After sloping the native soil away from structures and installing proper drainage ( as needed ) we cover the native soil with a geo textile or weed barrier. This material functions as a membrane reducing the likelyhood of the sub base material  being compromised by possible shifting of the native soils in the installation area.

Installing the  Sub Base

Picture
Industry standards for sub base materials used can be Class II Road Base, Native Decomposed Granite (DG), and other  materials which can be compacted to a 90% or greater compation rate. Turf Pro Enterprises, Inc. utilizes a material which is pulverised granite. We have found this material to maintain the integrity of compaction, provides a smoother finish grade prior to turf installation and has a greater drainage rate than other native or man made materials available in our San Diego market. The engineered DG is layered in in 2" depths, roughly graded and compacted.

Preparing the Sub Base for Installation

The final layers of engineered DG are layered in, finish graded and compacted to a smooth finish. We sculpt the edges of our sub base for tuck points for the artificial grass edges to be fastenened into which provides for a more realistic end result.

Installing the Turf

Picture
Each manufacturer has different requirements for an installation to be considered warranty compliant. The turf shown in this image requires a bonding seam tape to be used to adhere each section of turf to the other. We measure each section and create an installation plan to a schematic drawing  to insure an installation with the greatest measure of integrity possible ( fewer seems ). Each length of turf is cut from the primary roll and positioned into place. The grain of the turf must face the same direction and be situated facing towards the primary perspective point for the most realistic finished appearance. Seams are alligned and affixed together with a warranty compliant adhesive tape. We also use steel fasteners along the seam lines to insure long term integrity of the seam . After allignment we stretch and fasten the field with 4"-6" steel fasteners to prevent wrinkling of the material which can happen due to the expansion and contraction of the material due to change of temperature in the areas installation. Once stretched and fastened in the field of the turf we cut the turf to fit , fasten and finish the edges with the same steel fasteners used in the field of the installation.

Finishing the Installation

Picture
Most artificial grass manufacturers require some type of ballast or in-fill be utilized over the surface of the installed turf. This material is worked into the spaces between the blades of the turf.  The prupose of in-fill is to help the surface fibers of the turf to stand more upright and also to weigh the turf down diminishing the development of wrinkling.

Several materials are available for this requirement. Turf Pro Enterprises, Inc. consults with the client to determine the intended uses for their artificial grass and can make reccommendations for which materials available in the industry would be most appropriate for the use on their installation.

The picture in this section shows one of our Turf Pros utilizing a tool called a power broom. This piece of equipment is used to lift the lower fibers and separate the surface fibers so the in-fill material can be more evenly distributed over the surface.

A seed or fertilizer spreader is used to apply the infill to the reccommended  weight per square foot.

Finishing of the surface is done with another application of the power broom, working the in-fill material to the backing and lifting the turf fibers for the intended realistic apperance.

The End Result

Picture
Once complete your artificial grass installtion will provide many years of enjoyment. Maintenance will require a perioodic rinsing. If your grass will be subject to pet use there are a number of products on the market which we can provide the homeowner with to manage odors and cleaning.

The average lifespan of an artificial grass company in San Diego seems to be between 6 months to one year. Over the past few years our company has been called upon to help many home owners whose selected turf company has gone out of busines. In fact about 30% of our work load is addressing either faulty installations from companies still in or are now out of business or helping customers with warranty issues which they cannot solve due to the installation company they selected being uncooperative or now being out of business and not knowing who or how to contact the manufacturer of their turf product.

Turf Pro Enterprises, Inc. is commited to furthering the success of the synthetic turf industry in our community and is happy to consult with you about any issues you may have with your artificial grass installation.
